celebration of gospel 2010
A show with the perfect comedy tone - maybe the best ever on TV - that has earned it rank of one of the longest running prime time shows -- is feted tonight with a Morgan Spurlock documentary, "The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special: In 3-D! On Ice!" (Fox, 8:30 p.m.).
As in his other work ("Fast Food Nation," "30 Days"), Spurlock injects himself into the piece and maybe stretches the narrative to guarantee trips to Argentina, where the cartoon is most beloved, to Brazil, where people are still miffed about an episode set there. He also travels to England to find one of the top collectors of memorabilia. But the strength of the overview lies in the stories of the actors behind the voices, and the real life inspirations behind some of the characters and the thoughts of the creators themselves.
The most fitting tribute comes by preceding the film with a top notch episode of "The Simpsons" (Fox, 8 p.m.) that will counter those who say the show's best days are in the past.
The much hyped "Chuck" (NBC, 9 and 10 p.m.) returns for a new season with two new episodes (and another new one Monday) as well as an entirely new premise: the Nerd Herd salesman played by Zachary Levi who had become an accidental operative after government information was downloaded into his brain is no longer a bumbling would-be spy, he's a skill-possessing hero in any number of unrealistic situations, as he strains to win the affections of a girl he professes to love (but for some reason neglects to join so he can pursue his new dreams of being a spy). For a show that never really mixed the humor with the action very well, this seems a wrong turn, gives the faux adventures an even more false note and will likely provide the final nail in the coffin. As in his other work ("Fast Food Nation," "30 Days"), Spurlock injects himself into the piece and maybe stretches the narrative to guarantee trips to Argentina, where the cartoon is most beloved, to Brazil, where people are still miffed about an episode set there. A new "Nature" (CPTV, 8 p.m.) looks at those busy little birds in "Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air."
Harrison Ford seems the natural choice to narrate "Brace for Impact" (TLC, 9 p.m.), a one hour documentary on the landing a year ago Friday, of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 into the Hudson River. After all, Ford is a pilot himself and was on that hijacked plane on "Air Force One."
The mundane chores of the patrol is jazzed up and made to sound monumental in the new "Border Wars" (National Geographic Channel, 9 p.m.),
The AFC WIld Card Playoff has the Baltimore Ravens at New England Patriots (CBS, 1 p.m.). The NFC Wild Card Game has Green Bay Pakers at Phoenix Cardinals (Fox, 4:30 p.m.).
The 10th "Celebration of Gospel" (BET, 8 p.m.) gathers performers including Yolanda Adams, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Fred Hammond, Kelly Price, Ledisi, Donnie McClurkin, Shirley Caesar, Marvin Sapp, James Fortune, Fantasia and her mother Diane Barrino Barber, perform in an event taped at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Steve Harvey.
